Traveling around the globe collecting remarkable snapshots of beaches, waves, mountain ranges, deserts, jungles, all while being able to experience the essence of adventure. Corey Rich has built a distinguished reputation as being one of the most sound adventure photographers to catch the images and stories of life. Working with many of the top athletes in the adventure world, Corey brings home stills that capture the minds and dreams of every outdoor enthusiast. The images take us from flipping through magazine pages in our favorite coffee shops to destinations around the globe and up vertical walls. The images don’t just depict a moment, they tell a story, they bring the adventure to our home. They bring the mountain peaks, the beaches, the waves, the jungles to us. Each images creates a new dream, a new check box on our on going tick list for life.

For almost two decades Corey has been capturing images of adventure at its highest level; Working with National Geographic, Apple, Patagonia, Sports Illustrated, Marmot, along with athletes such as Ed Viesturs, Tony Hawk, Chris Sherma, Kasha Rigby, Kelly Slater, and Bear Grylls.

“It’s an ongoing odyssey of unforgettable stories, dawn light and timeless images.” Corey Says.

Corey’s stories are endless and represent a person that is passionate about their work, a cause, the outdoors, and adventure. We were lucky enough to catch up with Corey and find out a little about his adventures in life.

What are the challenges you face as a professional adventure photographer?

I make pictures in an environment where I am challenged not only creatively, but also physically. The point at which I am maxed out aerobically is generally the very same moment I need to focus my energy on capturing the action through the lens. All the while, no matter how much mental or physical energy I’m exerting, I’m always partitioning part of my brain to focus on safety. There’s an old saying in aviation, “There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots”. I think that same rule can be applied to adventure photographers.

How do you embrace those challenges?

In my field, a well-tuned body is just as important as a trained eye. As often as my schedule allows, you’ll find me outdoors making the most of the season. Whether that means climbing, skiing, mountain biking, or on a long hike at the end of the day, I am always moving. Work hard, play hard.

I’m certain to always embrace where I am – live in the moment. Also, when I’m outdoors, working or playing, I’m very conscious as to never be so rushed or distracted that I overlook safety. There is no image so important that it’s worth risking my safety or that of the athletes.

What has been your biggest career accomplishment?

There is no one single accomplishment that I’m most proud of. It’s the everyday that makes me happy. I wake up each and every morning with a smile on my face and the realization that I’m getting paid to do what I love.

How do you get energized and stoked?

The people around me are my greatest source of energy and inspiration. I am constantly amazed by the ways in which athletes continue to redefine the limits of the human body. Also, I am very fortunate to be able to work with such great people. Many of the models and athletes that I work with regularly I count amongst my best friends.

The other thing that energizes me is just being outdoors and reminding myself that my office is made up of the earth’s great wild places. I never take that for granted and wouldn’t trade it for anything.

What’s your next big adventure?

Coming up on the travel schedule is Brazil, Colorado, Europe, China and Iran. That’s all the detail I can give you for now, but I’m preparing my body for being in a seated position for long stretches of time. Thank goodness for audio books. They make air travel much more enjoyable.

What’s your Ultimate Adventure?

I’m not sure if I’ve yet identified my “Ultimate Adventure”. Though, I have yet to shoot in the Himalayas. That is definitely high on my to-do list.

Do you have specific goals with your work?

My main goal is to continue making great pictures and tell amazing stories. More specifically, I am seeing my role evolve from being a photographer to becoming a visual storyteller. Technology now allows us to gather and present content like never before. The results are incredible and the only limit today is our own imagination.

Currently my work consists of approximately 50% video content and 50% still images. I think this mix will continue to grow in favor of the video projects. At the end of the day, what I really love is just telling stories, no matter the medium.

Favorite Coffee?

Nothing better than and ice cold Pacifico with a lime. Oh, wait – you said coffee. In that case…

Among their great variety of coffees is the “Access Fund Blend”. 10% of the profits from this special blend go directly to the Access Fund, a cause near and dear to my heart.

Corey and his wife Marina live in South Lake Tahoe, California, home and still one of Corey’s favorite places to work and play. If you can’t find Corey behind the camera somewhere around the world chances are you will catch him skiing in Tahoe, riding the single track through the sierras, or passionately working on a new project at the local crag.

“For all passionate people, the lines between work and play are hazy. As I’ve grown, so has my passion for telling stories through photography. When I’m not on assignment, I’m at home in Lake Tahoe where chasing adventure is as simple as opening the back door to three-feet of newly fallen snow, miles of unexplored trails and thousands of untold stories.” – Corey Rich
